Soil

Plants are covered in sand, either in holes or in pits, which may be on the perimeter or throughout the entire property.

Hills are not very tall and they are at altitudes between 200 and 500 meters above sea level. The highest point of the island is 670 m.

Soils are very different and there is even deep red soil on ancient basalt formations. These soils appear as dirt beds as they have been covered by the most recent volcanic eruptions or by colluvial deposits.

They present a red color, loam-lime-clay texture, an average organic matter content that ensures a supply of nitrogen appropriate to the vine’s requirements. The main macronutrients (N,P,K) are optimal and have free carbonates that create a basic pH.

In accordance with the classification provided by the Soil Taxonomy, the island of Lanzarote has four types of soil:

1)   Aridisol
2)  Entisol
3)  Andisol
4)  Vertisol

These soils share the following aspects:

  • low amount of organic matter
  • weak biological activity
  • alkaline reaction
  • surface textures tending to be sandy
  • accumulation of carbonates and sulfates
  • modifications to the soil surface
(such as the presence of desert pavement, crusting, etc.)

The soils where vineyards are located are volcanic, which differ vastly and even have deep red soil on ancient basalt formations. They appear as dirt beds as they have been covered by the most recent volcanic eruptions or by floodplain deposits. The lapilli or “picón” layer covers the vine’s topsoil, facilitating the quick filtration of rain water, preventing the topsoil from evaporating and maintaining a constant soil temperature (temperature controlling effect).

The surface of most vineyards is covered with black volcanic ash that does not allow for other vegetation to grow but has excellent properties to retain moisture from dew. This means that the vineyards planted here also prosper because under the ash, the soil is fertile, made up of clay or sand on a bed of limestone.
